Tile buying guide for UK homes
Your room, your ideas — with a little help from our tile experts. This guide takes you through choosing Porcelanosa and other tiles, working out your boxes and getting ready for delivery. If you would like a hand at any point, our Yorkshire team is happy to help.
1. Choose for the surface
Choose floor tiles for floors and check the product's published suitability for the room. Wall and floor tiles have different requirements, so use a wall tile on a floor only where the manufacturer explicitly permits it. A bathroom wall, shower floor and outdoor terrace have different requirements; ask us if the specification does not confirm your intended use.
2. Compare material, finish and size
Review the material, finish, thickness and published dimensions on each product. Nominal names such as “60 × 60” can differ from the exact manufacturing size. Polished, glossy, matt and textured surfaces look and feel different in changing light. Screen colours and visual previews are approximate.
3. Measure your room
Measure each rectangular area in metres and multiply width by length for square metres. Add the areas together. For walls, measure each wall separately and agree deductions for openings with your fitter. Irregular rooms, steps, niches and patterned layouts need a more detailed cutting plan.
4. Allow for cuts and order whole boxes
The product calculator uses the selected variant's published coverage per box. Enter your measured area, choose an allowance appropriate to your layout, and review the rounded box quantity and total before adding to your bag. Confirm the allowance with your fitter; diagonals and complex patterns can need more cuts. If you cannot see box coverage for your chosen tile, let us check it for you before you order.
5. Check the full project
Plan compatible grout and adhesive, trims, substrate preparation and any waterproofing system with your installer. Underfloor heating compatibility, slip performance and outdoor use must be confirmed for the specific tile and installation system. A slip rating alone does not establish suitability for every wet area.
6. Confirm delivery before booking your fitter
Add the complete order to your bag and check your postcode for delivery options. Read our delivery guide, tell us about access restrictions and wait until your goods have arrived and been checked before arranging installation.
7. Inspect before fixing
Check the product, quantity, shade and batch details on arrival. Compare tiles from several boxes before fixing, following the manufacturer's layout and installation guidance. Keep box labels and contact us promptly if anything is damaged, incorrect or unexpected.
